Managing diabetes means juggling routines, medications, and symptoms, all while trying to live a normal life. The stakes could not be clearer: Every missed dose or interaction guess adds up to preventable health events, costly ER visits, and mounting frustration. For insurance companies and pharmacies, every missed dose increases costs, complicates care, and risks the patient's life. Without personalized, adaptive support, both business and user journeys faltered, urgently pointing to the need for a smarter, more human approach to habit formation and triage.
Our key design question:
How might we guide adults with diabetes toward timely medication use and safe self-care, while measurably reducing churn, costs, and missed doses?
To ground the design in real safety, adherence, and lifestyle needs, we mixed methods so every insight tells a human story.
To ensure each interaction guided patients safely and efficiently, we tested prototype understanding and measured behavioral shifts using design variants.
Data-driven mindset: Launched a mini-dashboard that showed project KPIs daily for the team, not just leaders.
Conflict resolution: Mediated tough tradeoffs when pharmacy and clinical advisors disagreed. Drove consensus on refill timing and advice language.
Solution evangelism: Shared project milestones with partner networks, inviting feedback and sparking collaboration offers.
Human-AI design standards: Embedded HAX/PAIR principles into chronic-care flows for explicit confidence, user agency, and trusted escalation.
Domain expertise: Embedded best practices from chronic disease management and digital therapeutics for diabetes self-care.
Business literacy: Prioritized features that moved prescription fill rates and ER visit reduction, aligning design with ROI and payer goals.
Market differentiation: Delivered a privacy-first, evidence-aligned AI coach, positioning the platform for digital pharmacy leadership.
